This week our Map of the Week is a terrestrial pocket globe dated from the 1800’s. The globe shows the earth while its spherical case shows formations of stars known as constellations.
Australia is shown on the globe as ‘New Holland’ . It was known as this by Europeans until the name was changed to Australia by the British government in 1824.
The globe also shows the Indian subcontinent as ‘Mogul India’ from the time of the Mogul Empire that began in 1526 and ended in the mid-19th century.
This fascinating globe is kindly on loan from Brent Museum and will be on display until June 2014.
