London Youth Games Inclusive Zone Basketball (IZB) Competition

Redbridge is getting ready for the London Youth Games Inclusive Zone Basketball (IZB) Competition next week at Crystal Palace!

The team has been training at Frenford Club for the past 4 weeks and have been selected from Wheelchair Basketball Players who attend Frenford Falcons sessions or through the Falcons schools outreach programme.

IZB is a 4-a-side game, developed to enable players who cannot participate in a running game of basketball. The game is suitable for electric wheelchair players, manual wheelchair players and ambulant with physical impairments.

A basketball court is split in to three zones, players in the central zone typically play in a manual sports wheelchair or electric wheelchair and the players in the two wing zones are ‘runners’. The small-sided teams and adapted playing area enable girls and boys, both disabled and non-disabled, to participate in a fun game of basketball.

The Redbridge team are looking forward to competing at the IZB Competition at Crystal Palace on Wednesday 2nd April.

Good Luck everybody taking part!

Redbridge Museum – Object Of The Week

At the heart of Redbridge Museum is a unique collection of over 7000 objects, oral history and film. Once a week we will be selecting one object from Redbridge Museum’s collection to share with you online.

Yesterday, Monday 24th March, marked World Tuberculosis Day, this day aims to raise public awareness of tuberculosis, how to prevent and treat the disease.

Until drugs because available in the 1950’s tuberculosis could only be treated by complete bed rest and fresh air. Rural rest homes called sanatoriums were built in the British countryside.

In 1919 Harts House was one of these sanatoriums. It was located in the quiet village of Woodford Green at a time when tuberculosis killed 30,000 people in Britain every year.

This week our object of the week is a 1950’s Artificial Pneumothorax machine, it was used to deflate a lung infected with tuberculosis.

Visit Redbridge Museum to find out more about the history of Harts House and use our interactive computer programme.

Name  Artificial Pneumothorax machine

Associated Dates– 1950’s

On loan from – Royal London Hospital Museum and Archives

Location– On display,  Redbridge Museum 2nd Floor, Redbridge Central Library, IG1 1EA

Us Girls Rock!!!

Us Girls took to centre stage last Saturday (8th of March) to celebrate International Women’s Day 2014. All across Redbridge events were taking place in aid of this important day, from suffragette walks to movie screenings to lectures and books readings – we had it all! Us Girls took an energetic approach to their celebrations and gathered over 100 women and girls to take part in their special activity day ‘Us Girls Rock’.

Dressed in their free Us Girls Rock t-shirts the ladies got stuck in with events including: Zumba, Boxfit, Rebounding and Rounders. A chill out area providing free massages was set up to allow participants to calm down and unwind after a vigorous day of exercise.

You can check out footage of the Zumba Flash Mob here:

The day was a huge success and Us Girls are excitedly looking forward to doing it again in the future. Well done to all the lovely ladies that got involved! Here’s to another successful International Women’s day! The battle for equality continues.
