Classy Cupcakes

The Do More team love cake. Here at our office in Ilford, one of our staff members frequently makes us delicious baked delights, all of which get devoured within minutes. The corridors of our building are always buzzing with an endless round of “mmmmm’s” and “yummmm’s”.  The best thing about cake is that you can have it for any occasion, for a birthday, a wedding, a christening, an anniversary, a graduation, a Tuesday…?

If you like you cake just as much as we do then bring your kids down to Valentines Mansion this Sunday (6th October) and decorate your own cupcake to take away! You’ll get the chance to have a hands on go at decorating in the Mansions amazing Victorian Kitchen. You can also dress up as a Victorian cook and learn all about how the kitchen worked.

This is a great family activity, full of fun and mess! Open to families, the event runs from 2 pm – 3.30 pm and costs £4 per child. Pre-booking is recommended.

Check out the website ‘life’s a strawberry’ for some handy tips on baking the perfect cupcake every time.

Also a bit of advice from us…If you have never tried a red velvet cupcake with vanilla frosting…DO IT! Trust us, it’s seriously scrummy.

National Poetry Day!

National Poetry Day is upon us again! So channel your creative literary genius and start penning poetry. This year the theme will be water – drawing inspiration from Coleridge’s mariner’s famous cry “Water, water, everywhere.”

Last year National Poetry Day reached a stonking 50 million people, for 24 hours. Let’s make that number even bigger this year! Come down to Redbridge Central Library and share your poems with us. We will try and feature a few of them on here, so keep your eyes and ears peeled!

Don’t worry you don’t have to be a professional; we want to hear from everybody. You don’t even have to write a poem, you can just bring along a water themed one you love.

We will be hosting an Open Mic Poetry night in celebration of the day. Come and experience the pleasure of reading to an audience using a microphone, or just sit and listen to the beautiful words being read to you. A secret guest poet will also be reading for your enjoyment…

This event is will be taking place on 3 October and welcomes all ages. Free Admission. Starting time will be 6.30 pm.

Redbridge Central Library, Clements Road, Ilford, Essex, IG1 1EA

Booking is essential, to book your slot to read, call Rose on 020 8708 9066 or email rose.meredith@visionrcl.org.uk

This is a wonderful day, one that is not to be missed!

Woodland Management

All over the world our landscapes are being built upon and developed into vast urban areas. This worrying trend can be seen stretching right across Britain as we lose more and more of our beautiful green spaces each year.  Even if you haven’t noticed it yet,  in a few years’ time you definitely will. If we continue to cut into our countryside without putting anything back soon there will be no more country parks, no more gardens, no more fields, no more green.

Aristotle once rightly said ‘in all things of nature there is something of the marvellous’so let’s take note from these words and help protect our rural areas and keep the magic of nature alive.  An action as simple as planting a tree for every one that gets cut down could help keep our world green.

We need you to help us in our mission to protect our environmental spaces! Join the rangers and lend them a hand on Tuesday 1st October as they aim to thin and restore more open areas within the secondary woodland, create maiden pollards and widen some of the main woodland rides.

Even the smallest of actions has a big impact; if everyone helps to look after their local areas then maybe we won’t lose our countryside after all. Let’s keep Redbridge the ‘Leafy Borough!’

This event is free and open to adults; it will take place at Hainault Forest Country Park between 10 am – 2.30 pm.

Joining instructions: meet at the second car park, IG7 4QN

Make, Do and Mend Craft Fair

With less than 3 full months of the year remaining, Christmas is pulling us a little closer each day. We know…we’ve done it; we’ve gone and committed a cardinal sin…we mentioned the festive season before Halloween has even hit. Sorry! But, seeing as everyone seems to be a little strapped for cash and the key to Christmas success is planning ahead (take note all of those whom frantically scour the shopping centres at the last minute on Christmas Eve), we thought you might like to know about the Make, Do and Mend Craft Fair taking place at Wanstead Library this Thursday (3rd of October).

Instead of digging deep into your wallets, and desperately stretching every single penny, why not make your gifts for friends and family this year? Come on down and have a look at the variety of craft demonstrations and displays taking place throughout day and draw some inspiration, you might even find a few bits to help you create your individual presents.

If you’re not looking to have a creative Christmas just yet, why not find something to brighten up and decorate your home? You could even seek some advice and give up-cycling a go! Pop along and have a look at the embroidery, knitting, wood turning, card making and flower arranging displays – there may even be the chance for some to join in. Afternoon tea will be available between 2 pm – 3 pm.

Everyone loves a little creativity!

The event is open to adults and will be taking place at Wanstead Library, Spratt Hall Road, Wanstead, London, E11 2RQ. Admission is free.  The fair runs from 11am – 3pm.

If you’d like to know a little more, please give us a ring on 020 8708 7400 or email wanstead.library@visionrcl.org.uk
